Dr. Nathaniel P. von der Embse is an assistant professor in the pediatric school psychology program at East Carolina University. Dr. von der Embse’s research is organized around social justice, advocacy, and the leadership development of school psychologists to ensure equitable academic and socio-emotional outcomes. His research is focused in three primary areas: (1) a social justice framework for examining the consequences of educational accountability policies and high-stakes testing, (2) the development of brief assessments of internalizing behavior, and (3) technological applications to promote coping and socio-emotional wellness. Dr. von der Embse received his Ph.D. in school psychology from Michigan State University and completed an APA approved, APPIC pre-doctoral internship at Boys Town Center for Behavioral Health in Omaha, NE. He worked as a school psychologist in Michigan and Ohio where he completed his master’s and educational specialist degrees in school psychology from Miami University. Recently, Dr. von der Embse was interviewed by TIME magazine for a story on test anxiety and high stakes testing. Dr. von der Embse has authored 7 peer-reviewed articles and presented nationally and internationally on high-stakes testing. He is an editorial board member for School Psychology Forum and Journal of Educational and Psychological Consultation, and a reviewer for Best Practices in School Psychology VI.
