Michael Furlong, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department the Counseling/Clinical/School Psychology at the University of California Santa Barbara, and the Director of the Center for School-Based Youth Development. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 16, School Psychology) and the American Educational Research Association, and was elected to the Society for the Study of School Psychology. He has co-edited several special journal issues related to school violence (School Psychology Review [1994], Psychology in the Schools [2003, 2007], and the Journal of School Violence [2007]). He co-edited the Handbook of School Violence and Safety (2006, 2012) and the Handbook of Positive Psychology in the Schools (2008, 2013). In addition to school violence research, he studies the role that positive student engagement plays as a protective influence for youth. He is a co-developer of the California School Climate and Safety Survey, the Multidimensional School Anger Inventory, the California Bully Victimization Scale, the Positive Experiences at School Scale, and the Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile. He is currently the Editor of the Journal of School Violence.
