Dr. Huebner is Professor and Director of the University of South Carolina school psychology program. His research falls within the positive psychology movement. Specifically, he focuses on the conceptualization, measurement, and applications of child and adolescent life satisfaction or perceived quality of life (PQOL), a psychological construct that allows researchers to assess students’ psychological well-being below, at, or above a neutral point. Major contributions have been: (1) the development of a conceptual model of PQOL appropriate for school-age students; (2) development and validation of five measures of students' PQOL, each of which is appropriate for particular research and clinical applications; (3) application of PQOL assessment to children with special needs, such as learning disabilities and emotional disabilities; (4) determination of empirical linkages between PQOL and school outcomes (e.g., school coping behavior, grades, student engagement), physical health (e.g., illness, exercise), mental health (internalizing and externalizing behaviors), and risk behavior (e.g., alcohol and drug use, sexual risk-taking, violent behavior, and eating behavior); (5) identification of the roles of individual differences, life experiences, and cognitive attributions in PQOL; and (6) articulation of implications of the research for the delivery of innovative school psychological services. (7) The measures have been translated into numerous foreign languages and used in cross-national studies.

Dr. Huebner’s research work has resulted in more than 200 publications and numerous national and international conference presentations and about 6000 citations. Along with Dr. Rich Gilman, he guest-edited a special issue of School Psychology Quarterly in 2003, introducing the topic of positive psychology to the school psychology community. In 2009, he co-edited a book entitled “The handbook of positive psychology in the schools” for Routledge (with Rich Gilman and Mike Furlong).

Dr. Huebner is a Fellow in APA and ISQOLS and elected member of SSSP. He has been the recipient of the Outstanding Contributions to School Psychology Award from SCASP, Distinguished Alumni Award from Indiana University College of Education, and Research Mentoring Award from the USC Psychology Graduate Student Association. He has been among the “top 5” most productive authors in school psychology for more than two decades (Martinez, Erichsen, & Floyd, 2012). Dr. Huebner has also mentored a number of students who have made important scholarly contributions of their own, including two Lighter Witmer Award winners (Rich Gilman and Shannon Suldo) and others (e.g., Nansook Park, Keith Zullig).
