Elise Cappella, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University. Dr. Cappella received her doctorate in 2004 in Clinical Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, with a minor in Education and Policy for Children and Families. Supported by the Spencer Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, Dr. Cappella developed and evaluated a prevention program to reduce relational aggression and enhance prosocial leadership among elementary age girls. She received recognition for this research in the Emory L. Cowen Dissertation Award for the Promotion of Wellness (American Psychological Association [APA] Society for Community Research and Action) and the Gabriel Carras Research Award (NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development). As an Institute for Education Sciences [IES]-APA Postdoctoral Education Research Training Fellow and a co-investigator on a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-funded intervention trial (MH073749; PI: Atkins), Dr. Cappella worked with colleagues and community partners to implement and examine a sustainable school- and home-based mental health intervention focused on the academic achievement of children with disruptive behavior problems in urban elementary schools. Dr. Cappella served as co-principal investigator on the IES-funded efficacy trial of INSIGHTS (R305A080512), a multi-component program focused on enhancing the academic learning context for children in urban schools. She was awarded an Early Career Research Award from the Society for the Study of School Psychology and a Community Collaborative Research Award from the NYU Steinhardt School to conduct process research to refine and contextualize an emerging teacher consultation and coaching program, called BRIDGE, for its implementation settings. As a co-investigator on the Center for the Study of Schools as a Context for Urban Children’s Mental Health (NIMH 1P20MH078458-01A2), Dr. Cappella completed an implementation and outcome evaluation of BRIDGE. Finally, Dr. Cappella has conducted a series of studies to advance understanding of the peer contexts, teaching practices, and school climates that contribute to child academic and psychosocial development in elementary and middle grade schools. She was recently awarded a Spencer Foundation grant to examine in a national sample the psychological and academic trajectories of students across the middle grade school transition to determine whether school instructional and social climates attenuate the negative impact of the transition experience on students experiencing risk. Dr. Cappella’s work has been published in journals that bridge research and practice (e.g., Journal of Educational Psychology, School Psychology Review, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology) and funded by public and private organizations dedicated to education and mental health (e.g., IES, NIMH, Spencer Foundation).
